MotoGP: Rossi Sets the Pace in Sepang Testing, Followed Closely by Stoner

What Happens When the Time is on the Other Side of the World

11:54am EST — The MotoGP field completed the first day of a second set of testing at the Sepang Circuit in Malaysia on Thursday.  Again, Valentino Rossi was fastest and a surprise contender was Loris Capirossi in fourth on his Suzuki.  Just behind Rossi, by one tenth, was Casey Stoner, followed by Andrea Dovisioso.  After Capirossi, Ben Spies continued his attack on world motorcycle racing, with the 2009 WSBK champion and full-season MotoGP rookie ahead of his teammate Colin Edwards, who posted the sixth fastest times.  The following times and laps posted are courtesy of the official MotoGP website:

1. Valentino Rossi, Fiat Yamaha Team, 2:01.068, 47 Laps
2. Casey Stoner, Ducati Marlboro Team, 2:01.219, 33 Laps
3. Andrea Dovizioso, Repsol Honda Team, 2:01.631, 52 Laps

14. Hector Barbera, Aspar Team, 2:02.485, 62 Laps
15. Randy De Puniet, LCR Honda MotoGP, 2:02.535, 76 Laps
16. Marco Simoncelli, San Carlo Honda Gresini, 2:03.254, 53 Laps

Jorge Lorenzo did not participate in the test, having broken his hand  a week or so ago in a motocross accident.  This, apparently, did not dampen the team’s spirits, as one of the mechanics, Alex Briggs, noted on Twitter after the session, “We are racing the rider back to the hotel and he just went the wrong way…..Ha Ha!”  Dani Pedrosa, Alvaro Bautista, and Aleix Espargaro fell at various times, but returned to the track.  Nicky Hayden, riding the other factory Ducati, posted the eleventh fastest time, but is still recovering from surgery a couple of weeks ago.  Testing begins again tomorrow for the final day of pre-season testing.
