Official: Glock to Drive for ManorGP

What Happens When The Announcements Begin Again

8:58am EST — ManorGP announced Tuesday that Timo Glock would be the lead driver for the team in 2010, partnering a currently unknown driver.  According to Glock, “the team may be small and new but it has big ambitions and a very impressive car and development program. I am confident that I can play a big role in terms of my technical input and that’s a fantastic opportunity for me. I can’t wait to start testing the new car early next year.”  Team technical director Nick Work expressed his excitement about combining youthful exuberance with experience, as well, saying, “to get a driver that has not only achieved podium finishes in 2009 but has such proven talent and the potential to take us forward for many years is very exciting.”  Glock had been released from his contract option by Toyota before the 2009 season had ended, and was left without the Japanese company as any sort of employer option when they withdrew from the sport altogether.  Glock will drive for ManorGP in 2010 and 2011, with an option for 2012.

While nothing has yet been announced, most in the Formula1 community believe that Manor will have title sponsorship by the Virgin brand in 2010 and beyond.  Nearly to months ago, The Independent reported that Virgin had filed legal documents taking over the team, and that Nick Wirth’s appointment as technical director, along with Alex Tai”s role as chief executive, along with John Booth as race engineer are all at the behest of Virgin.  Also considered to be a sponsor for the team, making it one of the better-sponsored new teams, is Lloyd’s Banking Group.  This announcement brings the number of offiical 2010 drivers up to ten, with  Ferrari (Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso), Red Bull (Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber), and Williams (Rubens Barrichello and Nico Hulkenberg) with full driver line-ups, and Lewis Hamilton at McLaren, Robert Kubica confirmed at Renault and Glock at Manor.
