WSBK Portimao Race 1: Spies Has a Dominant Win as Haga Crashes Out

What Happens When the Championship Really Goes Down to the Wire

8:59am EST — Ben Spies won the first race of two for the final round of 2009 World Superbike action in Portugal Sunday, as the points leader going into the race, Noriyuki Haga crashed out halfway through.  This win gave Spies a fifteen-point lead before the second race run later in the day.  Johnny Rea and Max Biaggi rounded out the top three.
