F1 Singapore Friday Practice 2: Vettel Fastest, Renault Has Pace in Hands of Alonso

What Happens When Crashes Do Not Dominate Singapore

9:32am EST — The first half hour of the second Friday practice was relatively standard, with drivers lapping and setting their practice times, until Mark Webber crashed heavily on the front straight, out of Turn 23.  The session was red-flagged, and Webber walked away and seemed unhurt, though extremely angry.  The track re-opened in less than ten minutes, and the short break allowed SPEEDtv commentators Bob Varsha, David Hobbs, and Steve Matchett to discuss the recent Renault WMSC decision, with David Hobbs particularly incensed that Nelson Piquet, Jr. had crashed at all, and that he waited until he was fired to inform the FIA.

The rest of the session remained uneventful, with every driver but Webber on the track at the end.  Fernando Alonso threw himself into a last-second fast lap, ending up second behind a bit of traffic.  Sebastain Vettel showed the Red Bull had speed, hoping to keep his title hopes alive as the Brawns of Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello were fifth and eleventh, respectively.  Webber’s early fast time was enough to keep him in sixth.  Good news for Heikki Kovalainen, as he posted a time four tenths faster than teammate Lewis Hamilton, and six places ahead.  Qualifying Saturday (morning? evening? night?) will be most interesting and informative.
