USF1 has YouTube Sponsorship

What Happens When There’s No F1 Videos on YouTube? They Make their Own

—According to TechCrunch, “a network of technology focused sites offering a wide range of content and new media,” YouTube has invested/is investing in USF1 (now called USGPE), the 2010 team begun by Ken Anderson and Peter Windsor and based in NASCAR-country: Charlotte, North Carolina.  The author of the article apparently spoke to BestBuy (an electronics chain store who is also considering sponsorship of USGPE) Chief Marketing Officer Barry Judge, who said that YouTube founder Chad Hurley is “the big investor” for the team.

Great news that this team is getting some sponsorship, though they have long been linked with YouTube in Media speculation.  Apparently, the team currently only has about twenty staff members, though they do have a signed contract with Cosworth to supply engines.  Windsor is best known on this side of the Atlantic for great track-side F1 coverage on SPEEDtv and Fox and recently gave up his position as post-race interviewer due to the team owner conflict of interest.  Also important to USGPE’s possible success, Windsor was team manager for Williams F1 when they semi-recently won the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championship.

Definitely a great addition to a possible F1 return to North American at Montreal in 2010.

  1. I had no idea Windsor had experience with F1 at Williams. Oops.

I’m still a bit skeptical though – Google is constantly complaining that they’re shedding millions a year because of Youtube, and now they’re going to go sponsor a Formula 1 car? I know they don’t need the exposure here in the US, so maybe it’s a good idea.

I don’t mind Best Buy advertising, I just don’t want to see us Americans represented with a Formula 1 car covered in McDonald’s logos.
